Cryogen Vent Systems
Engineered for Extreme Thermal Events
Facilities Construction Services (FCS) provides turnkey design, installation, and maintenance of specialized Cryogen Vent Systems (Quench Pipes). In the event of an MRI quench, liquid helium expands 700+ times its volume into a gas at temperatures below -450°F. Our systems are engineered to safely exhaust this massive pressure at high velocity, protecting your building and its occupants.
Under the oversight of our Professional Engineer (PE), we ensure every component—from the bellows to the weather cap—is calculated to handle the thermal shock and backpressure requirements of your specific MRI modality.
Vent System Capabilities
Design & Calculation
Precision routing and diameter calculations based on magnet manufacturer specs (OEM) and total pipe length to manage backpressure.
Structural Shoring
Engineered support systems designed to handle the dynamic weight and vibration of a high-velocity helium exhaust event.
Insulation & Condensation
Cryogenic-grade insulation and proper drip-leg installation to prevent icing and moisture damage within the facility envelope.
Quench Pipe Testing
Non-destructive weld testing and joint integrity inspections to ensure the pathway is airtight and structurally sound.
Bellows & Flex Joints
Specialized expansion joints that allow for thermal contraction during a quench without compromising the pipe’s structural seal.
Maintenance & Inspections
Scheduled audits of weather caps, screens, and drip legs to ensure the system is free of obstructions and debris.
Quench Path Integrity
A cryogen vent system is a dormant life-safety device that must perform perfectly during a rare but catastrophic event. FCS manages the complex structural penetrations and roofing coordination required to ensure a direct, unobstructed path to the atmosphere.
Our team coordinates with your roofing contractors to ensure that specialized vent caps are properly flashed and located away from air intakes, preventing dangerous gas re-entry into the building's HVAC system.
AHCA & OEM Compliance:
- • PE-Verified Support Structures
- • Cryogenic Thermal Analysis
- • Proper Effluent Discharge Height
- • Seismic/Dynamic Loading Compliance
